Mathew Hopkins: From Parts Trainee to a Rising Star in Westar’s Parts Team

December 5, 2025

When Mathew Hopkins first walked into Westar Trucks in November 2023, he had no idea how quickly he would grow within the business. He started as a Parts Trainee and began his apprenticeship in April 2024 through MEGT and Skillinvest, completing his Certificate III in Automotive Parts Sales. The apprenticeship runs for two years, and Mathew completed it in full which set the tone for his rapid development in his career.

Mathew’s day is a steady rhythm of customer service and problem-solving. He spends his time answering phones, picking orders, and replying to email enquiries he receives each day. It’s a fast-paced role, but one he has grown to love.

For Mathew, the best part of the job is the people. He says the team are always willing to help and that Westar feels like a real family environment. That support has played a big role in shaping his confidence and skills during his apprenticeship.

His apprenticeship has taught him just how important customer relationships are. People come back because of the service they receive, and Mathew has built such strong rapport that many loyal customers continue to contact him for his knowledge. It’s a level of trust that reflects the relationships he’s worked hard to build over the years.

The journey has not been without challenges. Coming from a car background, the move into trucks brought a steep learning curve. The parts and systems were completely different, but Mathew’s willingness to learn helped him adapt quickly.

Training has played a huge role in Mathew’s development. With ongoing learning from Penske, Isuzu and internal training, he enjoys every chance to expand his knowledge. His performance reflects this growth, consistently hitting targets which are driven by strong customer relationships with businesses such as GMK, Newgen Truck and Trailer, Epping Mechanical and Diverse Diesel.

Mathew says his biggest mentors have been Anthony Ormando (Parts Manager) and Steven Costantini (Assistant Parts Manager), who he describes as always willing to help and answer questions. He says they’re the best leaders he has had in any job.

Parts Manager Anthony has high praise for Mathew, saying:
“Mathew has been consistently achieving his KPI’s, achieving well over most of the senior parts staff. Mathew has the learning potential many would be envious of. He is reliable and always willing to help above expectations. His fellow peers even ask him for help regularly. Mathew has also received numerous great customer reviews.”

From trainee to a top performer, Mathew Hopkins has carved out an impressive path in a short time. With his natural customer skills, eagerness to learn and strong team mindset, Mathew is proving to be one of the brightest rising talents in the Westar Parts department, and his journey is only just beginning.
